PINEHURST, NC • PINEHURST NO. 2 — July 2, 2026 — Strivers Row Media — Given the incredibly inclement weather that forced a delay in play during round 2 of stroke play, one could rightfully ask “Was it the shoes?” or “Was it the skill?” Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in between with the precocious youngster having shown steely resolve in righting her ship after an uncharacteristic 4 over par 76 during the first round of stroke play at one of amateur golf’s most important tournaments.
“Lady Shinnecock” may be an appropriate sobriquet for her as she did her very best Keith Mitchell impersonation by carding one of the all time greatest round-to-round improvements in the 124 year history of the event, shooting 76 in round 1 and a lowest-round-of-the-tournament 66 in round two. The early part of her second round portended what was to come when she eagled the par 5 second after a prodigious 300 yard tee shot that dissected the fairway like so many steaks at this weekend’s 4th of July cookouts. The drive placed her within shouting distance of her hoped for first ever albatross. The 2-time Taiwan National Champion having famously made a hole-in-one just a few weeks earlier in her practice round at the 81st playing of the U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA where she was the youngest golfer in the field (see: https://striversrowmedia.com/youth-is-served-15-year-old-teen-golf-phenom-lin-jie-en-makes-a-hole-in-one-and-prepares-to-take-the-u-s-womens-open-at-riviera-country-club-by-storm/). The biggest bird wasn’t to be and she settled for an impressive eagle to officially right the previous day’s ship. Her bid to keep her round blemish free ended at the 8th when she bogeyed the hole after missing a makeable putt on one of Pinehurst’s notoriously tricky greens. She continued storming back with birdies on 9 and 12 until triskaidekaphobia reared its ugly head leaving her to bogey 13 en route to a 10 shot improvement and a final round of stroke play 6 under 66.
In the first round of match play which takes place today, July 2, 2026, Jie-en is paired with Ella Scaysbrook, the soon-to-be 21 year old Australian standout who is particularly deserving of her berth in the tournament. It is fitting that Jie-en represents The South in the tournament given her penchant for all things Southern American culture.
With Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie Woods, on the men’s side of the tournament, the golf world’s and the general public’s eyes will certainly be bearing witness to the future of golf in Lin Jie-en and Charlie Woods, among other future stars.
