DAYTON, OH • WALNUT GROVE COUNTRY CLUB — July 9, 2026 — Strivers Row Media — Continuing one of the most impressive runs in recent amateur golf history, the precocious youngster who is too young to drive a car let her prodigious 300-yard drives do all of her talking in posting a bogey-free 4-under-par 68 which included four birdies.
Laconic to a fault when handling her business on the course, she got even more taciturn at the turn, letting her driver speak for her yet again on the 550 yard par 5 10th hole where she scorched a 311-yard missile to the middle of the fairway, got on in regulation, and comfortably made par in a failed bid to tie the tournament’s then-leader and eventual winner, the outstanding Texan and James Madison University rising senior, Bella Flores.
While she aspired to be the event’s outright winner, coming in solo 2nd place just one back of the Medalist is a worthy consolation for Jie-en that adds to her impressive summer haul. With a cut line of 3 under — a score every weekend hacker on the planet would pay dearly to shoot just once in a lifetime – Walnut Grove would send its top four performers on to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship being contested at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, TN from August 4-9, 2026.
One of those four lucky ladies who is headed from Walnut Grove to Ooltewah is the super-talented sure-fire future LPGA Tour player, Virginia Tech Hokie rising senior, Emily Mathews, who battled it out with Ms. Lin less than a week ago at the North & South Women’s Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 where the youngster defeated Mathews 3&1 en route to a strong semifinal performance that saw her bow out after taking the eventual champion, Ole Miss star, Mary Miller, into the proverbial shark-infested deep waters of the 17th hole where she needed a birdie and just couldn’t get one to fall. “I really enjoy competing against the world’s very best amateur and professional golfers,” the phenom stated shyly. “I’m learning so much and am building what I am sure will be lifelong friendships in the process. My hosts have been so nice to me and my dad everywhere we go. I’ll try my best to pay it forward with similar acts of kindness along my journey,” she continued.
On the way to earning her spot in the field at next month’s single most prestigious amateur tournament for women, Jie-en shot the lowest round of the tournament at the North & South Women’s Amateur Championship with a blistering 6 under par 66 on Pinehurst No. 2’s notoriously tricky greens.
Faster than a speeding Edwin Moses, she’ll high-step her way from Moses’ native Dayton to Durham, NC’s magnificent Old Chatham Golf Club where she will compete against the world’s best junior golfers in the U.S. Girl’s Junior Championship beginning on July 13, followed immediately by a start north of the border in the 112th playing of the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at the fabled Toronto Golf Club in Mississauga, Ontario beginning on July 21. The precocious peripatetic will then be off to Ooltewah, TN where the bobby-soxer will hope to hoist the Robert “Bobby” Cox trophy, the longest-serving original USGA championship trophy which is awarded to the Champion of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
